          All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Kindergarten   News
October 10, 2008

Dear Parents,

Many thank you wishes to many people are in order. Thank you to Mrs. Brehob, Mrs. Beaver, Mrs. Gusoff, & Mrs. Wagonschutz who drove us on our recent field trip to Leslie Science Center and to Concordia University for chapel. Thank you also to all of you who sent in apples for our applesauce. Finally, thank you to all of you who have already volunteered in our classroom or as a Mystery Reader, etc., etc., etc. Our school and specifically our kindergarten class could not offer all the extra programs without you!

There is a homework opportunity attached to this sheet. Thank you to all who completed last week’s work!

Wednesday, October 15th, is Family Visiting Day. This is a special day set aside to encourage family members to come see their child in the school setting. We will have a normal school day (i.e. Chapel, Literacy, Math, Art, etc.). I look forward to seeing any of you who are able to visit us.

This Friday, October 17th, is an Alternate Dress Day. Several times during the year the children are allowed to wear clothing other than their school uniform. Please refer to the St. Paul Blueprint for clarification on appropriate attire for the day.

The Kindergarten is scheduled to sing at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Liberty site (downtown) on Sunday, October 26th, at the 10:45 a.m. service. I truly believe that children of all ages need to learn how to be leaders in a worship service. Singing in church is definitely one way to have this experience. I do expect all St. Paul members to attend this opportunity. If you are a member of another congregation you are more than welcome to join us but I do understand if you have commitments at your own church.

This Week Ahead

Notes for 10-07-08:  The meaning of the Hebrew word "nephesh." :  properly, a breathing creature, i.e. animal of (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal sense;

nephesh

1) soul, self, life, creature, person;

1a) that which breathes, the breathing substance or being, soul, the inner being of man

1b) living being

1c) living being (with life in the blood)

Plants were not given the "nephesh" so in a biblical sense are not alive.  Thus, plants would not be considered as dying when eaten by man or animal prior to sin entering the world.

Students are taking notes on The Canopy Theory and what positive benefits it would have had, and what are the negatives to this theory.

Positives:  Filtering of the Sun's harmful UV rays, a planet wide warm climate, hyperbaric like effects affecting the healing process of injuries, a possible explanation for OT Patriarch's long ages.
Negative:  Too much pressure which could increase the Earth's temperature too much.

Students and Parents: Here is a list of the science classroom procedures:

1.  Arrive to class on time
2.  Once in the classroom, please sit down and wait for instructions.
3.  Classroom supplies:  pencil and or blue or black pen, lined loose leaf paper, graph paper, color pencils, textbook
4.  Raise hands when desiring to respond or have a question
5.  Always have the previous days work completed and ready to grade

Middle School Science Presentations
During the course of each semester, the middle school students will be presenting small science demonstrations before their peers.  Many books on science experiments are available at the library and at book stores.  You can also get science experiments off the internet (www.kidzone.ws/science/index.htm;  www.hunkinsexperiments.com; )  There are MANY other sites that you can explore.  Students should practice their experiment at home before presenting to the class.  Girls and boys need to explain what is happening during the experiment.
When selecting a demonstration, I like to use the KISS method - Keep It Simple  Silly.  The best experiments are the ones that can easily be explained yet make a good scientific point.  During the course of each semester, the middle school students will have the opportunity to make their presentation.  There will be a note coming home next week with your childs assigned presentation date.
