Bible Study:
Memory work for recitation on November 19, 2008:
Isaiah 41:10: Do not fear, for I am with you; I will strengthen you and help you.
Isaiah 41:13: I am the Lord, you God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear.”
The children have begun a new unit called “Led by the Lord” and learn about Bible heroes – judges, kings, and prophets – who led God’s people. The children will learn that God is the real hero of each story!
Oral Language:
The children listened to their classmates perform a Readers Theater on Friday! They also enjoyed learning more about fighting fires from Logan West. Thank you Logan!
Math:
This week the children will practice addition facts: sums of 12, measuring, writing the date using digits, counting nickels, creating a bar graph, creating and reading a Venn diagram.
Word Work:
This week’s spelling rule: digraphs – ch, tch, sh, th.
Language Arts:
The grammar focus: abbreviations. The weekly writing project: personal narrative. The focus writing trait: voice. The classroom story bag is making its way to each student’s home. Please try to return it by the next school day!
Reading Skill and Strategies:
The students will use, Jamaica Louise James, a story from their anthology, to develop this week’s comprehension skill: author’s purpose. This week’s fluency skill: punctuation. The vocabulary words: filthy, fellow, executive, beautifying, renowned, kin, original adorn.
Self Selected Reading:
Each student should be giving me their completed reading log and starting a new one. Please check your child’s folder to see if there are reading logs that need to be turned in.
Pizza Hut Book-It! The beginning of November signals another opportunity for your child to participate in the Book-It program. November logs are available. Your child will receive a coupon from me for a free, individual sized pizza if they read 20 minutes a day for 20 days. The books they read for second grade count toward this goal.
Physical Education:
The second graders are practicing jumping skills using ropes and hula-hoops.
Social Studies/Science:
The second graders will begin learning about germs in science.
Selections from National Geographic Explorer magazine are read and discussed every Thursday afternoon! Last week the children enjoyed reading about Death Valley.
Spanish:
The children really enjoy watching the Muzzy video segments during afternoon snack time.
Fine Arts:
Art class is every Monday at 1:00 p.m. Music class is Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. Choir with the first graders is Friday afternoon at 2:30. Art class is every Monday at 1:00 p.m.

Dear Parents,
The first few days of this week will be used to complete the second formal language arts assessment which tests the skills the students learned during Theme Two. When they have completed the assessments, I will begin Theme Three.
