Notes for 10-07-08: The meaning of the Hebrew word "
nephesh." : properly, a breathing creature, i.e. animal of (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal sense;
nephesh
1) soul, self, life, creature, person;
1a) that which breathes, the breathing substance or being, soul, the inner being of man
1b) living being
1c) living being (with life in the blood)
Plants were not given the "nephesh" so in a biblical sense are not alive. Thus, plants would not be considered as dying when eaten by man or animal prior to sin entering the world.
