Guidelines for 8th Grade DC Monument
This year’s project will consist of 3 sections:
- Build a detailed model of your monument.
· There will be NO extra credit for edible models, and in fact I am discouraging students from making them. It seems to be much harder to make a realistic looking model when trying to use edible building materials.
· While parents are encouraged to assist their children with this project, please make sure the student is still doing the work.
· This model does NOT need to be built to scale, since 9/11 it is nearly impossible to get blueprints or structural drawings of the monuments.
· Your model should include some landscaping as well. Depending on the location of your monument you will need to include something representing grass, fountains, gardens, roads, etc.
- Include a 2- 3 page paper about your monument.
- Paper needs to be double spaced, Times New Roman 12 font, with .75 margins, and include a bibliography (the bibliography does NOT count as one of the 2-3 pages and should follow MLA guidelines).
- You must use at least one book source in your research.
- You need to hand in 2 copies of your paper. One will get turned into Ms. Twork who will be grading on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The other copy will get handed into Mrs. Anderson who will be grading it for accurate content.
- Your paper should discuss the history of the construction of your monument, and the significance of the person/event your monument was constructed to honor.
- Give a verbal explanation about your monument to Mrs. Anderson.
· Students should have their prepared explanation typed on a sheet of paper or note cards.
· The verbal explanation only needs to be 1-2 minutes in length and should summarize what the student covered in their paper.
· Students should also be prepared to answer questions posed by Mrs. Anderson.
· Students will also be making this same speech when we stop at their real life monument when in D.C. in May.
Due Dates:
· 2 copies of research paper due on Thursday February 19th
· Model and verbal explanation due on Monday May 4th
