Language Arts Exhibition Night - Monday, November 17th
§ Seventh and eighth graders will be focusing on American poets AND poetry which they have written themselves
§ The schedule for seventh and eighth graders is as follows:
o 7-7:30 The seventh grade will be reading/reciting their poetry while the eighth graders will be presenting their posters of an American poet
o 7:30-8 The eighth graders will be reading/reciting their poetry while the seventh graders will be presenting their posters of an American poet
§ Readings/recitations will be done in the fine arts room. Posters will be displayed in the middle school hallway.
Part One: Display
§ The board (trifold poster) will include
o A short biography of American poet as posted in the classroom (page or so - 2-3 paragraphs)
* birth/death
* short paragraph about his/her life leading up to writing period in life
* paragraph about how he/she got into poetry; types of poetry he/she
wrote; for which poems is he/she best known
o Two to three examples of his/her poetry
o An analysis on each poem chosen
o Content of chosen poetry must be appropriate to a Lutheran school; if it is not, choose a different piece
o Most of the research will be done at home (very little class time will be devoted to this part)
o Grading: 150 points - rubric will be available on November 5th
§ A sampling of poetry written by the student, in a pleasing format
o Typed or neatly handwritten in ink
o Colored illustration, appropriate for poem
o Poetic form of poem (traditional, haiku, cinquain, historical, ballad, etc)
o Four to five poems
o Board may be split between poet and self (neatly - must be distinct) or poetry should be put into booklet form
o Grading: poems will be graded individually as they are written and turned in throughout this unit
Part Two: Reading/Recitation
§ Each student should be prepared to read one of the poems he/she has written
§ Grading: 100 points - rubric will be available on November 10th
